CLAN HISTORY
By: Gerardo “Gerry” Tiongan
The ACAWAN and AGUNAY-PON-OY CLAN is of the lead families at Kapangan scattered in the different parts of the municipality of Benguet. The descendants migrated and living mostly in La Trinidad and nearby provinces. Since there were no census or records available during the past, interviews by our second and third generation informants were the research tools used in the study, thus the basis of its accuracy and reliability can be relied on by memory and by cultural tradition and practices our rituals, the name of our ascendants are always invoked in our offering prayers.
At the dawn of 18th century, LANGBIS (father of ACAWAN) migrated and settled in the sloppy hills of Amyonget, Balakbak, Kapangan. He is one of the ten siblings sired by a mercantile trader from Banao, Bauko, Mt. Province and whose mother hails from Palina, Kibungan. According to the tales as narrated from generation to generation his other brothers also settled in other outskirts of Kapangan particularly at Pudong and Paykek. Sometime in the 1830’s, LANGBIS and his wife bore their only son who was to be called ACAWAN, presently regarded as our FIRST GENERATION ASCENDANT. He married a maiden named Agunay who hails from Atok and together they produced four offsprings, three males and a female. The eldest being CODMALI (female), DAGUEMEY (female), MADLAING and LAGYUPAN respectively.
Agunay has a younger sister named PON-OY who stays and lives with them. During one lovely evening, ACAWAN and PON-OY went to a nearby creek for fish hunting (pinagninigay), Pon-oy, who was by that time is blossoming to a lovely lady caught the fancy of ACAWAN. Adrenaline pumping in his veins and oozing with sexual desire that went for her. Fortunately Pon-oy did not object to the advances of his brother in-law.
To neutralize the wrath and ill feelings of his parents in-law, ACAWAN was penalized (minulta) to butcher his gangling longhorn carabao (Sawak). Thus ACAWAN acquired two wives; sisters as well as living together in the same roof. With PON-OY, they produced five males and one female offspring’s namely POSAWEN, SAGES-E, LOMIDIO, AMMEY(female), LANDISA and LAWANGEN.
